Welcome Week: Introduction to Austrian Culture, Communication, Education and Geography 2 - 28SWELW02N - 1 ECTS
Participation in the introductory week is mandatory for all incoming students at PHOOE, so please plan your travel accordingly! The program includes a welcome part, excursions in the city and to the mountains with a lot of information about Austrian geography and culture, all technical information you need to know about the university's systems like Digital Learning Management, your electronic course calendar, using the computer systems, an introduction to school practice, etc. It usually runs for 4 days and usually starts in the week before regular courses start, so for the winter semester usually in the last week of September and for summer term in the last week of February
Insight Austria: Austrian Culture, Communication, Education and Geography 2 - 28SINSA02N – 2 ECTS
Course content:
This course offers an engaging introduction to Austrian culture, history, and contemporary society. Designed especially for international and Erasmus students, it provides a broad overview of Austria’s cultural landscape—from historical developments and national identity to modern-day customs, politics, and everyday life. Through lectures, discussions, field trips, and multimedia materials, students will explore key aspects of Austrian culture, including:
- Historical milestones shaping Austrian identity
- Art, music, and literature in Austrian heritage
- Social norms, traditions, and values
- Austria’s role within the European Union
- Regional diversity and multicultural perspectives
- Contemporary issues in politics, media, and public discourse
Onboarding 2 - 28SONBO02N – 1 ECTS
This onboarding course is designed to support incoming students as they begin their exchange studies at PHOÖ. It offers a structured introduction to the Austrian school system, school life in Austria, and expectation towards teachers in training. The course also introduces foundational concepts in education, encouraging students to reflect on their own learning experiences, beliefs about teaching, and professional goals. In addition, participants explore the roles and responsibilities of teachers in contemporary educational settings, with attention to diversity, inclusion, and ethical practice.
Outdoor Education in a Sustainable and Inclusive Context 2 - 28SOUTE02N - 3 ECTS
Children and adolescents nowadays often miss a close connection to nature, a resource that can help to gain self-awareness, self-confidence and can foster emotional strength.
This course will provide you with a lot of adventurous and also gentle methods to bring children and adolescents in closer connection to nature and also offers learning opportunities in the outdoors, for science and sports education. A strong focus goes on team-building exercises for the classroom.

Course content
Incoming students at PHOOE get the chance to spend half a day per week—typically on Wednesday mornings—in one of our partner practice schools under the supervision of selected practice teachers. During this time, they engage in classroom observation, undertake their own teaching activities, and participate in reflective practice.
In addition to the practice teacher, each group is assigned a university tutor who provides further academic guidance and support. The courses “Classroom Management” and “Lesson Planning and Designing Teaching Materials” complement the teaching practice and provide valuable support.
Lesson Planning and Designing Teaching Materials 2 28SLPDM02N – 2 ECTS
Course content:
The course is designed to support students in the effective planning and implementation of their school practice. It includes individualized planning within the respective practice groups, allowing participants to align their teaching activities with the specific context of their placement.
A central component of the course is the creation and preparation of teaching materials, with particular attention given to working collaboratively in heterogeneous groups. Students engage in the design of inclusive and adaptable resources that address diverse learner needs.
In addition, the course introduces and critically explores a broad repertoire of teaching methods. Where time permits, selected methods may also be tested and reflected upon in practice.
Classroom Management & Innovative Teaching Strategies 2 - 28SCMIS02N – 3 ECTS
Course content:
This course explores the basics of effective teaching and classroom practice. Students get equipped with the skills and insight needed to create productive and inclusive learning environments. A central focus is placed on professional communication in the classroom, alongside the development of strong classroom management strategies that support both structure and flexibility.
Participants will examine the characteristics of effective teaching and learning, while gaining practical tools for organizing classroom activities for diverse groups of learners. The course highlights the importance of recognizing individual differences among learners and adapting instruction accordingly through thoughtful individualisation.
A key component of the course is understanding the multifaceted role of the teacher. In addition, the course addresses both preventive and reactive strategies for managing conflicts in the classroom, as well as effective approaches to group formation and collaboration.
Through hands-on project work, participants will apply theoretical knowledge to practical situations, integrating their previous experiences with new insights gained during their placement. The course also encourages the development of a personal pedagogical self-image, supporting participants in shaping their identity and approach as educators.

Art in Education 2 - 28SARTT02N – 2 ECTS
Course content:
We work practically on various design topics such as painting, graphics, printmaking, photography, lettering and mixed media. Lectures are also given on these topics; the different techniques and ideas will be useful and practical for your art teaching.

German Advanced - 28SGERA02N – 3 ECTS (language of instruction: mainly German)
Course content:
This advanced German course is designed for learners who already have upper intermediate knowledge of German, thus around level B2 (minimum at B1), and want to refine their fluency and accuracy. The course focuses on developing communication skills across speaking, listening, reading, and writing, with an emphasis on speaking.Participants will engage with course book material as well as authentic materials such as articles, films, and media, enabling them to expand their vocabulary and deepen their understanding of idiomatic language. The grammar topics covered will be chosen according to the students’ needs and will be integrated into meaningful communicative contexts. Interactive discussions, debates, and presentations play a central role in the course, encouraging students to articulate opinions, analyse abstract topics, and respond spontaneously in German. By the end of the course, students will be able to communicate with confidence in a variety of professional and social settings while gaining deeper insight into German speaking cultures.
German Beginners - 28SGERB02N – 3 ECTS
Course content:
This course is specifically designed for those students who have not had a chance to study German yet and have little to no knowledge of the German language. The students will be provided with a course book - ‘Schritte Plus A 1.1’ – complemented by additional teaching material. Apart from studying basic German grammar students will learn how to communicate in everyday life situations in Austria, e.g. ‘Introducing oneself’, ‘My Family’, ‘Food and Drink’ and ‘Numbers’, just to name a few. In addition, cultural topics such as Austrian festivities and traditions will be treated in order to raise cultural awareness. The main goal of this course is to support students in their everyday life in Austria.
By the end of this course, students’ German language skills in Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking should be at level A1 with the focus lying on speaking and listening. Students will be able to converse in basic German to order food, ask for the bill and understand directions.

This course includes an excursion to UNODA (United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs) at the Vienna United Nations Center and includes a briefing with UNODA's Chief of Staff, as well as meetings with representatives of NGOs like the Womens Federation For World Peace, Amnesty International, etc.. It also includes an online meeting with an Israeli historian and peace education activist about the Israeli/Palestinian conflict.
Teaching Very Young and Young Learners – early childhood education, its opportunities and challenges 2 - 28STEYL02N – 3 ECTS
Course content:
This course provides an introduction to teaching English as a second or foreign language to very young learners (VYL) and young learners (YL). It is designed for students who wish to develop both theoretical understanding and practical skills for effective, age-appropriate, and inclusive English language teaching in early childhood and primary school contexts.
Participants will explore the key characteristics of VYL and YL and examine the principles underlying the teaching of English as a second language. The course introduces a range of language teaching strategies and a variety of teaching resources such as course books, games, songs, and rhymes, focusing on their suitability for different age groups.
Further topics include Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) and its practical application in the classroom, as well as the implications of teaching English in inclusive settings. The course also addresses multilingualism and its impact on language learning, highlighting both its benefits and challenges. In addition, students will explore opportunities for promoting language development in early childhood and primary education.
Using Video and Radio in Schools 2 – 28SVIDE02N - 3 ECTS
Course content:
In this course you will get basic competences in using video and audio in the classroom. We learn how to produce and publish podcasts and to do radioplays and features with young people. You take part in student TV and radio live shows and learn how this can be done in context of e.g. “school radio- or TV”.
From recording to editing and publishing you learn mostly in practical team work - there are no previous knowledge or technical competences required.
Please keep in mind that at least part of this course will be held in block format - you will receive details and dates during the welcome week.

| Teaching and Research of Ukrainian Children in the Austrian School System | 28STRUK02N | 5 | Ukrainische Studierende in Bachelor- und Masterstudiengängen der Bereiche Bildung, Pädagogik und Sprachwissenschaft absolvieren ein intensives Schulpraktikum im österreichischen Schulsystem. Während ihres Praktikums unterstützen die Teilnehmenden ukrainische Kinder sowie Schüler*innen mit internationalem und mehrsprachigem Hintergrund an österreichischen Schulen. Die Lehrveranstaltung verbindet praktische Unterrichtserfahrung mit Reflexion und Forschung zu inklusiver Bildung, Mehrsprachigkeit, interkulturellem Lernen sowie zur pädagogischen Unterstützung von geflüchteten Kindern und Jugendlichen. Deutschkenntnisse auf dem Niveau B2 sind erforderlich. Studierende absolvieren ein intensives Praktikum im österreichischen Schulsystem und unterstützen sowie unterrichten ukrainische Kinder und Schüler*innen mit internationalem und mehrsprachigem Hintergrund. Die Lehrveranstaltung legt zudem einen Schwerpunkt auf die Analyse der Bildungserfahrungen und Teilhabe ukrainischer Kinder an österreichischen Schulen, einschließlich möglicher Herausforderungen in den Bereichen Sprache, Inklusion, Lernprozesse und soziale Integration. Mithilfe qualitativer Forschungsmethoden wie Interviews, teilnehmender Beobachtung und reflexiver Dokumentation erwerben die Studierenden praktische Erfahrungen in der Bildungsforschung und praxisorientierten Untersuchung. Auf Basis ihrer Beobachtungen und Analysen entwickeln die Teilnehmenden lösungsorientierte Strategien und Ansätze zur Unterstützung der Bildungsentwicklung, des Wohlbefindens und der sozialen Teilhabe der Kinder. Ein besonderer Fokus liegt auf der Bildungs- und Entwicklungsperspektive im Hinblick auf eine mögliche spätere Reintegration in das ukrainische Bildungssystem. Begleitend zum Praktikum nehmen die Studierenden an strukturierten Reflexionsphasen, Supervisionssitzungen sowie Vor- und Nachbereitungsformaten teil. Der Arbeitsaufwand umfasst zudem eine kontinuierliche Dokumentation der Praxiserfahrungen, das Verfassen reflexiver Berichte sowie die Entwicklung praxisorientierter Handlungsstrategien und Empfehlungen. |
