Accommodation

Dorm rooms

Dorm rooms tend to sell out quickly, so please do not put looking for housing off till the last minute. Also, please be aware that some of these dormitories require you to pay a first month rent in advance as well as the security deposit (the deposit will be refunded upon moving out).

Linz has many options for student accommodation, here is a list of some. Please check their websites for details and application procedures:

Learning Agreement

You have to start your DLA in your home university’s EWP (Erasmus Without Paper). As soon as you have entered all the courses, you have to sign it, then your coordinator has to sign it and then it will show in our application system Mobility Online (your university’s system and Mobility Online communicate with each other when it comes to your DLA).

After we have checked your learning agreement we will sign it (in some cases we might reject it, should any adjustments be required). Please keep in mind that some courses might be subject to change. Upon arrival you have two weeks for making changes to your DLA.

Should your home university not be included in EWP (Erasmus without Papers) yet, we are happy to accept the paper version of your LA (template as published by Erasmus+).

Travelling in Linz/Austria

Travelling to Linz is easy - it has its own, small international airport with regular flights, e. g. to Frankfurt or London - it's definitely worth checking it out. Not too far away is Vienna International Airport (which had a direct train connection to Linz from underneath the arrivals hall (go to the right when you come out the security area) basically every 30 min. Another airport option is Salzburg Airport which is not too far way either. Linz Central Train Station is a major hub with international train connections, also the Nightjet trains.

For travelling in Linz you will receive a so called “Aktiv Pass” which gives you access to a reduced monthly ticket for buses and trams! To receive the “Activ Pass” you have to register Linz as your “main residence” for the period of your stay. The Aktiv Pass is free of charge and also gives you access for free or cheaper tickets to visit museums, theatres, public swimming pools, etc.

Information on public transport in Linz: please note that no trams or buses run during the night from Mon to Fri, from midnight until 4:00 a.m. At the weekends (Saturday night): trams run 24 all night long! At any other time you can order a collective taxi (30 mins in advance)

If you wish to travel in and around Upper Austria and Austria the so called “Klimaticket” might be the right choice for you.

More information on “Klimaticket”:

Klima Ticket OÖ: Upper Austria only - (without Linz) or with Linz:
KlimaTicket OÖ Regional + Linz = only Upper Austria + Linz (incl. Tram)

Klima Ticket Ö: Valid in the whole of Austria for all public transport (train, bus, tram)
Note: the Klima Ticket (for the whole public transport system in Austria) is an annual pass. However, unused months will be refunded on a pro-rata basis upon return of the pass and by showing the deregistration document as proof.

For “green travel” within Europe the Interrail Pass for Erasmus+ students might be a great option: https://www.interrail.eu/en/interrail-passes/erasmus

Insurance & Visa & Registration

Insurance

It is the student’s responsibility to make adequate insurance arrangements for all eventualities and for the duration of the entire mobility including travel times. You might want to check with your bank to see what would be covered when using a credit card.

The accident- and liability insurance which is included in the compulsory student union membership in Austria (which is payable during the welcome week – around 25 Euros) gives you insurance cover for all activities that have to do with the university programme! But be aware that this is not a health insurance!

EU-citizens need an Electronic Health Insurance from their home country (EU-insurance card). Please note, that EU-insurance normally does not cover any transfer-costs to your home country should this be necessary. In this case, we recommend an additional travel insurance (check out credit card agreements, which sometimes include travel insurance).

Non-EU-citizens please check with your insurance company at home for possible agreements between your country and Austria. We recommend you to take out an additional travel insurance.

Visa & Registration

EU citizens:

  • Visa: No visa required to enter Austria. All EU citizens have to bring their Passport or Identity Card to Austria.
  • Registration: Once in Austria all students need to register at the City Hall or local library (free of charge) with the registration form they receive at the Student Residence and your passport/ID. For students who opted for private housing registration might be tricky depending on whether the person renting the flat out is actually the owner of the flat. When you registered Linz as your main residence you can obtain the “Aktiv Pass” which makes you eligible to discounts concerning public transport, museum, public pools, libraries, etc.

Important: Before departure you have to deregister at the City Hall or local library. Registration and deregistration are essential and not doing so is against the law.

Non-EU citizens

  • Visa: Please check the visa requirements with the Austrian Embassy in your country of residence. Click here for more information (https://oead.at/en/to-austria/entry-and-residence/)! For a list of Austrian embassies and consulates click here: (https://www.bmeia.gv.at/en/embassies-consulates/)!
