Travel to Linz

Linz is situated in the central part of Austria! It lies on the main train line between Vienna and Salzburg, as well as on the main western motorway A 1! It also has a small airport (Blue Danube Airport) with flights to and from Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Berlin, Antalya.

As Vienna Airport has a direct train connection to and from Linz, most of you will arrive either arrive at Vienna. Salzburg or Munich Airport are options not too far away as well. From Vienna Airport take the direct Railjet or Railjet Express (RJ or RJX) operated by ÖBB (Austrian Federal Railways). Between Vienna and Salzburg you can choose between 2 train providers, ÖBB and Westbahn (private). For regular tickets "Westbahn" is usually cheaper, although ÖBB often have very cheap offers (Sparpreis) if you book in advance via the Internet!

Important: the private "Westbahn" does not go from Vienna Airport or Vienna Central Station - it leaves only from Vienna "Westbahnhof" train station! ÖBB runs directly from the airport arrivals terminal.

If you intend to travel around more in Austria and your are under the age of 26, a reducation card (Vorteilscard under 26) might be a good idea! It allows you to travel half price on the whole network of Austrian Federal Railways and costs only € 19,90 if you are below 26! If you are older it's more expensive unfortunately. You can also order it in advance via the Internet and collect it at the train station later! You can also buy it at the train station in Vienna Airport. Deutsche Bahn (German Railways) also have cheap offers from Munich to Salzburg, like the "Bayern Ticket" (5 people can go for appr. 30,--), but then you need an onward ticket for Austria from Salzburg to Linz! If you stay for a whole study year the so called "Klimaticket" might be an option worth considering. It is a general ticket for all public transport all over Austria (trains, buses, city transport in all cities, etc.) Flixbus is not included.

If you arrive at Vienna Airport, you have direct Railjet or Railjet Express trains to Linz appr. every hour, sometimes every 30 min! See instructions how to get to the airport train station below. When you come out to the arrivals hall, just go to your right and down to the trains! Check the screens for the correct platform! The ticket office is on your right, when you come out at arrivals. There are ticket machines before you get to the trains as well.

If you arrive at Linz Airport you have buses to Linz Central Train Station every half an hour at ..:03 and ..:33 till 21:03 Mondays till Fridays! There is a reduced plan for Saturdays and Sundays - check online timetable using the links below. You can also ask at airport information desk for the free Shuttle Bus to Hörsching train station from where you also have trains to Linz Central Station!
